Everything looks different in the morning

We live in a world that pushes us to decide fast. Buy now. Text back right away. Say “yes” before you even think. But some of the best decisions aren’t made in the heat of the moment. They’re made after a pause. That’s where the 24-Hour Rule comes in. It’s simple: When you’re faced with a big decision, especially one charged with emotion, wait 24 hours before acting. Breathe. Let the dust settle. Sleep on it. Everything looks different in the morning.

Taking a pause before jumping into action doesn’t mean avoiding decisions. It means giving your mind and body time to calm down so you can think clearly. Anger, excitement, fear, and pressure can cloud judgment. After a night of rest or a day of distance, what felt urgent might feel more manageable. What felt like a “yes” might become a “no.” Waiting helps us respond, not react.

Sometimes, the best next step is no step—just a little time.

If you really need to do something now, try this simple practice to help you pause:

  1. Name the feeling. Say it out loud or write it down: “I feel angry,” “I feel overwhelmed,” “I feel pressured.”

  2. Write down the decision. Keep it short and clear: “I want to quit,” “I want to confront them,” “I want to buy this.”

  3. Set a 24-hour timer. Tell yourself: I don’t need to decide right now.

  4. Do something grounding. Go for a walk. Journal. Call a friend who helps you stay centered. Breathe.

  5. Return to the decision tomorrow. Notice what’s shifted. Maybe it’s your body, your tone, or your urgency. Then decide from that calmer place.
